About the Opportunity The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) offers the Afro-Centric Masters Thesis Scholarship to support African researchers conducting their master’s thesis. The ASCL, an interfaculty institute of Leiden University, is a national knowledge center on Africa in the Netherlands. It promotes understanding of historical, current, and future developments in Africa through research and teaching. The scholarship encourages the study of African cultures and societies by providing financial support and recognition to outstanding theses.
Eligibility
- Geographic Focus: Applicants must be citizens of an African country or students in the Netherlands.
- Academic Focus: Theses must be based on independent empirical research with a geographical focus on an African country, region, or its migrant communities.
- Degree Requirement: Master’s students who have completed their thesis between August 31, 2023, and August 31, 2024.
- Grade Requirement: Students in the Netherlands must have received an 8 out of 10 or above. Non-Dutch students with a grade A (or equivalent) may apply with a supporting letter from their supervisor.
Application Process
- Submit Documents: Send a digital version of the thesis in PDF format.
- Summary: Include a summary (max. 300 words) of the thesis.
- Recommendation Letter: Provide a signed letter of recommendation from the student’s supervisor, detailing the quality of the thesis, an explanation of the grade, and information about the educational institution.
